Periscope

It's time for a new edition of 451 CAOS Insight Update, the biweekly newsletter from The 451 Group Commercial Adoption of Open Source (CAOS) Research Service. This time, we share a little bit of our experience and our take on the O'Reilly OSCON conference, where we saw some interesting themes – open source champions who are driving its use across enterprises, service providers and customers; vendor education that is being passed on to users; and more references to 'devops' – all of which will be covered in a coming CAOS blog post. We also considered one of the biggest announcements discussed at OSCON – OpenStack from Rackspace and NASA – and weighed in on the CAOS Theory blog, where we highlight how OpenStack, while just initiated, demonstrates the significance of open source to cloud computing. In parallel with the discussion of OpenStack is the ongoing debate and analysis of open core: what it is, what it is not, and its role and impact for open source software. We've offered some discussion of what drives the division and discussion around open core, and have delved into the common criticisms of open core, as well as some thoughts on customer perspective. The significance of open source in mobile software and devices remains, and we recently looked at Rhomobile, backer of the open source Rhodes multi-smartphone development framework. Finally, we continue our series of open source Spotlight Reports, this time profiling Aras, one of the more interesting uses of open source with its product lifecycle management (PLM) software that runs on Microsoft.

As part of The 451 Group Commercial Adoption of Open Source Research Service, we also produce a regular podcast call for CAOS clients. The podcast includes a roundup of news, developments and disruption in open source software by 451 Group analysts Matt Aslett and Jay Lyman. The call is in listen-only mode, although we welcome questions, topics or feedback via email.

Archives of past calls are available as a public podcast through iTunes or from the CAOS Theory podcast site. Feel free to share this link with anyone.
